You know we've come individually into our own relationship, and we work very well now together. "I think even when Rob and I work together, we're still individuals doing our thing. We're like, 'Oh, that's awesome!' So we're happy being a package deal." Even when Supernatural calls us to host the panel at Comic Con every year, we are giddy about it. "We work together well, and it's always a treat. I'm comfortable enough to be associated with him as much as possible," Benedict shared. "Rich and I both have worked for 20+ years in the business. Still, they're both open to the opportunity to work with each other more often because of their close friendship and the level of trust they've developed. It seems very natural, so as much as it is a rare thing, it seems to make perfect sense to us and to Adam, so it's really great."īoth Speight and Benedict have had long and fruitful careers well before they knew the other existed, so working together is relatively new in the whole scheme of things. ![]() For Rob and me, it's like what it should be. "it was great when he went over to and had the foresight to pair Rob and me back together on the show. You know, Adam Glass is a guy we've known for a long time, and I was sorry to lose him from the Supernatural internal family, but not the external family." "It's crazy that as much as I work with that guy not on TV, that we've never been on TV," said Speight. Like, can you believe it? After all this time, this is the first time we've really worked together professionally. We kept saying it, too, while we were doing it. So this episode a big deal to both fans and the actors, alike.īenedict said, "Yeah. If you're familiar with the success of the Supernatural Cons, it feels like these guys are a package set, but other than what they've put together themselves (Kings of Con is a great fictional take they created based on their convention personas), they've never been on screen at the same time. "It made it very confusing on set," Benedict laughed. What were the odds Rob was going to be playing the guy named David, I wondered. This episode was the worst portrayal of my country and sadly, it also made a joke of the Criminal Minds brand as a whole. The Americans, Rob and David, are played by Richard Speight, Jr, and Rob Benedict, respectively. The person responsible for that particular episode – should have researched (what are you using your big monies for?), cast South Africans actors and most importantly remembered that as much as the show is international – that it is sold to "entry level markets" as we are referred to as. ![]() Our story goes beyond our Apartheid and Mandela legacy. ![]() South Africans are beautiful, talented and very proud. I am not even convinced that the episode was shot anywhere near our borders ("beyond borders"). The accents were very poor and pronunciation made a mockery of our Zulu language. While I am glad that our country made an integral part of that particular episode – I simply cannot forgive the poor cast selection (representing supposed black South Africans). As South Africans, we live in a world where we have to accept that Morgan Freeman will portray Mandela and Jennifer Hudson – Winnie Mandela because we simply do not have the big budgets to tell our own stories on a grand global scene as our international counterparts. ![]() I respect the international cast of the show – but I believe strongly that casting our local (black) South African actors could have vastly improved on the narrative of that particular episode. Upon watching season 1 – Episode 11 (Iqiniso) recently – I was appalled at how poorly my country (South Africa) was portrayed. My heart is heavy as I write this because I am such a fan of the Criminal Minds franchise.
